Creation of a Fantasy Ork

Hello, this is a cross-post from animation, because this topic is 3d modeling as well ;)

I'd like to demonstrate creation of an Ork character for a fantasy adventure game (Developer: 1C: Ino-Co /Publisher: Paradox Interactive ).

We get a sketch and start modelling. This is a real-time strategy game and all the in-game action and cut-scenes are played real-time. So the number of polygons is limited as well as texture size. As soon as the model is ready and approved, I go on to texture painting. Sometimes basic feature are only depicted on the sketch - body color, principal cloths, some details. So I have to think of appropriate skin and textil facture, draw the muscles (in proper places, which is extremely important), add some folds, perhaps patterns or other decoration.

Last step is to animate the character. By the way, modeller has to know were to cut the mesh in the right places for the joints to rotate comfortably. Animator completes image of the personage by creating animation corresponding to his or her nature.

Man BItes God Music Video Competition
Australian band, Man Bites God are bribing aspiring film makers with a chance to win AU$500 by making a music video featuring a Man Bites God song of their choice.

“A number of fans have made their own music videos for the band over the last few years and we wanted to recognise their efforts with a competition”, explains the band’s drummer and professional video director Chris Tomkins. “We’re not expecting anything amazingly polished for the $500 prize, we just want to see what great ideas are out there.”

The competition runs until November and is a simple as choosing a Man Bites God song, making a video and uploading to Man Bites God’s YouTube channel in order to be judged in November.

The band are looking for anything from surreal to literal, live-action, machinema, animation or some other technique that hasn’t been invented yet.

3D remote
Just realized I haven't posted any of my own work in a while. Here's something I created for my workplace a couple months ago. Currently working on some various virtual sets.

Created in Lightwave, using Illustrator to trace lines and build off EPSF files and Photoshop to create my button textures. Was supposed to be used in a commerical for my workplace, but they never got around to it, may be used in the future.

Cthulhu Inspired Design Sculpture
This is a piece I just finished this morning. I have been working non stop on a lot of concept art for various projects I have going on currently. The piece was sketched and then sculpted in 3D using Zbrush. This piece was inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft. I figured it would be a good study and practice piece. I hope you all enjoy.

Is anyone familiar with gmax, and could they give me (or point mr to) a tutorial on how to make a lenses on a pair of glasses look realistic (reflection to some extent, etc...) All i can find is 3ds max stuff Also, I plan on putting this in a game, so would all the property (or whatever) changes be present in the game?

.mdl files
Does anyone know of a program that can edit .mdl files? I would prefer free or shareware, as I do not have ~$3,500 for 3ds max. I just need minor changes done to some head models in star wars: knights of the old republic, so nothing too fancy is needed.

EDIT: Well, i found a solution. gmax with the NWmax 0.7 running alongside it. I had to extract the files with KotOR Tool, then convert them to the ascii based .mdl or something, then i opened it in gmax/Nwmax. I am not quite sure how to go backwards in the process but i'm sure i'll find out.

Hi there I´ve just started playing around with 3d modeling sofware, to pic up my old trade as a product designer (i used to do everything by markers and bluefoam back then), and I´ve got this software called Alias Studio Tools, and i was wondering if anyone here knows any good books or other educ. material for it?

Holy cow!

Is it possible to get euler angles directly from quaternions? Conversion from rotation matrices seems to cause gimbal lock. Guh.

Brief description:
Northstar is a 2D vertical scrolling shooter in the vein of games like Raiden and Ikaruga. It has been in production for a few months.

Target aim:

We are offering a percentage of the first-year revenues on this title, ranging from 3-5% depending on level of involvement.

This game is being developed for the PC and Mac (OS X) platforms. Contractors are requested to provide their own art suites. For interest's sake, it is being created using the Torque2D engine.

Talent needed:
3D Modelers - Responsible for modeling and animating npc enemy ships, boss characters and backgrounds as directed by the design documentation and producers. Prior experience definitely preferred, please provide a sample of your work when applying.

Team structure:
The current project team is comprised of six people:
- Myself: Executive Producer, Designer. Have been around since project start.
